WYD in Panama

World Youth Day, WYD, is about to begin.  It will take place in Panama from January 22 to 27, 2019.

There are currently 37,000 registered and it is estimated that more than 167,000 young people should finalize their registration in the next few hours.  Thus there will be some 200,000 people from 155 countries who will take part in this large gathering presided over by Pope Francis.  Among them, more than 1,000 indigenous young people will participate in their own WYD from January 16 to 19, 3 days before the start of the international event.

The WYD spokesman, Panamanian Giancarlo Candanedo, assures that this major event is being prepared in an atmosphere of prayer.  "We cannot forget that it is a major challenge for a nation as small as ours.  The Pope wanted to give this opportunity not only to Panama but to all Central America, and to all its bishops.  We cannot disappoint him.”  The Church was not alone in the preparations.  The government also set to work!  Candanedo points out that: "For the first time in the history of WYD, the government has created an administrative structure able to help us in organizing the event.  They have made things easier.  This has been a great help to the Church.”

Pope Francis will arrive on January 23rd
